Pakistan: US drone kills senior al-Qaida leader

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani intelligence officials say a U.S. drone strike has killed a senior al-Qaida leader near the Afghan border.

The three officials say Sheikh Khalid bin Abdel Rehman al-Hussainan, also known as Abu Zaid al-Kuwaiti, died Thursday when missiles hit a house near the town of Mir Ali in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area.

They say al-Kuwaiti's wife and daughter were wounded in the attack. His wife died at a hospital Friday in Miran Shah, another North Waziristan town.

The officials say al-Kuwaiti was buried near Mir Ali on Friday.

They say al-Kuwaiti replaced Abu Yahya al-Libi, al-Qaida's second in command who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in North Waziristan in June.

The officials spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.
